Scopus is one of the largest and most authoritative scientometric databases for searching, analysing and indexing scientific materials. - Wide coverage of sources. Scopus indexes more than 28 thousand scientific journals and millions of records. This gives scientists the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research and find information in different fields of specialisation.
- Convenient search using filters. A convenient interface and a sufficient number of filters make it possible to quickly find relevant materials by keywords, authors, publication date and more. This makes it possible to save time on searching and improves the quality of research.
- Profiles of organisations and authors. The platform contains more than 21 million author profiles and more than 94 thousand institutional profiles. This helps to track scientific productivity and increases the chances of cooperation with other scientists.
- Cooperation with other platforms. Scopus cooperates with other platforms, such as ORCID, Mendeley and others, which facilitates the process of managing bibliographies and exchanging data with other scientific systems.
What are the advantages of the Web of Science database?
Web of Science (WoS) is another authoritative and prestigious scientometric database. It also covers materials from various fields of knowledge, including natural, technical, medical, social sciences and the humanities. We discussed this platform in more detail in our article.
The main advantages of Web of Science include the following:
- High level of peer review. WoS journals undergo strict selection, which includes an assessment of the quality of the editorial process, scientific significance and ethical standards.
- Prestige and scientific recognition. Publication in journals indexed in Web of Science significantly increases a scientist’s authority in the scientific community. In addition, such articles are in many cases a requirement for obtaining grants, academic degrees or positions, as they confirm the author’s high level of knowledge and competence.
- International visibility. Thanks to a wide audience, the author’s articles have more chances of being cited. This contributes to the growth of the Hirsch index and strengthens the author’s position in the academic environment.
- Long-term impact. Materials published in this database remain available to the scientific community for a long time. This allows a scientist to effectively maintain their image over a long period.
Key differences between Scopus and Web of Science
Despite the fact that both databases are authoritative and prestigious, there are still certain differences between them, among which the following can be distinguished:
- Metrics and assessment methods. Both platforms use a quartile assessment system and percentile, but these indicators are calculated differently. Scopus uses indicators such as CiteScore and SJR (SCImago Journal Rank), whereas Web of Science uses JIF (Journal Impact Factor).
- Data volume. Web of Science has a longer history and provides greater citation depth, including archival data dating back to 1864. Scopus covers a larger body of contemporary sources, although it appeared later; however, some materials date back to 1788.
- Subject areas of indexed publications. A certain tendency can be observed on the platforms: Scopus is mostly focused on the humanities, social sciences and applied sciences, whereas Web of Science is focused on exact and natural sciences.
- Structure. One of the best-known structures of Web of Science is the Web of Science Core Collection, which is the basis of the database and consists of 8 separate citation indexes. Scopus is a more integrated platform, without division into separate collections.
- Cooperation with other platforms. Scopus works closely with the analytical platform SciVal, which makes it possible to conduct an in-depth analysis of scientific productivity. Web of Science is integrated with InCites, a system for assessing the research potential of authors, institutions and more.
To summarise, both platforms have a significant level of prestige and high authority among the academic community, and publications in them are highly valued by scientists, universities, grant committees and others. The choice of database for publication should depend on your goals, research topic, institutional requirements and more.
