Publication in journals indexed in Scopus is important for scientific activity and can influence the academic career of scientists. In the process of preparing an article, it is worth paying attention to a significant number of aspects, in particular the cost of publication. How much does it cost to publish a scientific article in a Scopus journal and what factors does the price depend on? Read our article.

What does the cost of publication in Scopus journals depend on?
There is no universal price for publication in Scopus, as the database does not directly determine this cost. Each journal or publisher sets its own price, and it may differ depending on a number of factors.
Journal access model
International Open Access journals are usually the most expensive, as publication in them requires payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC). Thanks to this, the journal covers certain editorial and publishing processes, while readers can access the article without paying for a subscription. It is worth noting that publication costs may be covered by a university, scientific institution or grant fund, rather than by the author themselves.
In traditional journals (subscription journals), publication is possible without an APC, but only subscribers receive access to the work. There are also journals that give authors a choice: to publish the article in closed access or to pay an APC and thereby make access open to all readers.
Level and reputation of the journal
Prestigious journals with high scientometric indicators may increase the cost of publication. In particular, this may be associated with higher expenses for the editorial process, technical support, quality control and promotion of materials.
Field of science
The subject area of a journal may directly influence the price of publishing an article in it. For example, in medicine, biotechnology, natural sciences and technical sciences, the cost of publication is generally higher than in the humanities or social sciences. This difference is caused by a larger volume of work, more complex data verification, research requirements, and so on.
Article format
The publication price may vary depending on the type and format of the work. This is due to the fact that some types of scientific publications, in particular review articles, clinical studies and large experimental works, may require greater expenses for editorial and technical processes.
Journal quartile
The journal quartile (Q) may indirectly influence the cost of publication in a journal indexed in Scopus. This is because a higher quartile often indicates a better level and reputation of the journal, demand for publication in it, as well as higher editorial costs.
Cost of publication in Scopus journals
| Journal | Field | Quartile | Price |
| Scientific Reports | Natural sciences | Q1 | $2850 |
| Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research | Medicine | Q1 | $3190 |
| Journal of Economic Structures | Economics | Q2 | $2090 |
| SN Computer Science | Computer science | Q2 | $3290 |
| BMC Research Notes | Interdisciplinary research | Q3 | $1790 |
| ROBOMECH Journal | Computer science and engineering | Q3 | $1750 |
| Arabian Journal of Scientific Research | Natural sciences | Q4 | No APC is charged |
| International Surgery | Medicine | Q4 | $2600; for members of the International College of Surgeons – $2,100 |
This list demonstrates that the quartile does not always influence the cost of publication. There may be both Q1-Q2 journals with a moderate fee and, conversely, some Q3-Q4 journals with a high cost. Therefore, it is worth clarifying the information by writing a letter to the editorial office or checking the current cost of publication on the official website of the journal.
